Cisco Certified Design Associate 640-864 teaches you how to plan and design enterprise networks using Cisco methods. It follows the Cisco CCDA 640-864 exam and suits network engineers and IT staff who want to move from building networks to designing them. You get 9 hours 12 minutes of self-paced training across 51 video lessons.

What you will learn

  • Use Cisco design methods, including PPDIOO and the eight-step design method
  • Plan a three-layer campus design and a modular network
  • Design enterprise campus networks that scale
  • Choose WAN and VPN technologies for remote sites
  • Design routing with protocols such as EIGRP
  • Plan inter-VLAN routing, multilayer switching and VSS
  • Use switch macros, smart ports, private VLANs and EtherChannel
  • Subnet IPv4 networks and plan IPv6 addressing
  • Design advanced services such as GLBP and wireless LANs

Course outline: Cisco CCDA 640-864

  1. Methodologies used to design a network: business trends, PPDIOO, three-layer campus design, modular design, the Cisco eight-step method and Cisco IIN.
  2. Network structure and modularity: design basics, design methods and enterprise campus design.
  3. Basic enterprise campus networks: campus design points and Cisco SONA.
  4. Enterprise edge and remote network modules: WAN and VPN technologies.
  5. IP addressing and routing protocols: routing protocol design and EIGRP.
  6. Enterprise switching I: inter-VLAN routing, multilayer switches, switch design, VSS and best practice.
  7. Enterprise switching II: switch macros, smart ports, private VLANs and EtherChannel.
  8. Subnetting: IPv4, subnetting practice and IPv6.
  9. Designing advanced services: GLBP, access points, radio frequency, wireless signals and WLAN to VLAN mapping.

Who this course is for

  • Network engineers who want to design, not just build
  • Network architects and design engineers
  • IT professionals who plan network upgrades
  • Learners new to network design who know the basics of networking
  • Students and career changers who want to understand how large networks are planned

Before you start

No formal prerequisite is required, but basic networking knowledge will help a lot. You should know what routers and switches do and how IP addresses work. A CCNA level course is a good first step. The subnetting module gives you plenty of practice, so do not worry if your subnetting is rusty. Work through each design method slowly and think about how it would apply to a network you know.

About the 640-864 exam

The 640-864 exam was issued by Cisco for the Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA) certification. It tested your ability to plan network designs with Cisco methods, from the campus and network edge to routing, switching and wireless. Cisco retired 640-864 in December 2015 and replaced it with 200-310, which Cisco then retired in February 2020. The design methods in this course are still a sound base for network planning. Network design is a skill that many senior network roles expect.

What is PPDIOO?

PPDIOO is a Cisco network life cycle: Prepare, Plan, Design, Implement, Operate and Optimise. The course uses it as a core design method.

Does the course cover subnetting?

Yes. A full module covers IPv4 subnetting with practice, plus IPv6 addressing.

Is wireless design included?

Yes. The advanced services module covers access points, radio frequency, wireless signals and mapping wireless LANs to VLANs.

What should I study before CCDA?

A CCNA level course, such as Cisco CCNA 200-301, will give you the routing and switching basics this course builds on.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. You get a StemBoss Certificate of Completion when you finish the course.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, within 14 days if you have completed less than 20% of the course. See our refund policy for details. Read the refund policy.
