  • Set up site-to-site and remote access VPNs
  • Harden routers and switches and protect routing protocols
  • Stop Layer 2 attacks with port security, DHCP snooping and ARP inspection
  • Explain firewall types, NAT and zone-based firewalls
  • Describe how intrusion prevention systems detect and block threats
  • Protect users from email, web and endpoint threats
  • Mitigate risks with VLAN security and secure switch settings

Topics covered

  • Security concepts: the CIA triad, common attacks, malware, cryptography and how networks are laid out, including virtual networks.
  • Secure access: secure management, AAA with RADIUS and TACACS+, 802.1X, BYOD and mobile device security.
  • VPN: IPsec, remote access SSL VPNs and site-to-site VPNs.
  • Secure routing and switching: router hardening, routing protocol authentication and VLAN security.
  • Cisco firewall technologies: stateful and stateless firewalls, NAT on the ASA and zone-based firewalls.
  • IPS: where to place sensors, how signatures work and how to handle false positives and false negatives.
  • Content and endpoint security: email threats, web filtering and endpoint protection tools.

Who this course is for

  • Network technicians who want to add security skills
  • Junior network administrators
  • Network support specialists
  • Security operations support staff
  • Infrastructure technicians who look after Cisco devices
  • Help desk staff who want to move into network security

Before you start

You should understand basic networking, including IP addressing, the role of routers and switches, and the difference between user and admin access on a device. Some knowledge of how traffic flows between networks will make the VPN and firewall lessons easier. If you are new to networking, start with a CCNA or Network+ course and come back to this one.

About the 210-260 exam

The 210-260 Implementing Cisco Network Security (IINS) exam was issued by Cisco for the CCNA Security certification. It tested your ability to install, monitor and troubleshoot a secure network that keeps data and devices safe and available. Cisco retired 210-260 in February 2020 and pointed learners to the 200-301 CCNA exam. The security skills in this course still apply to any Cisco network. They also give you a strong base for CompTIA Security+ and other security courses.
