It is for database administrators, data analysts, BI specialists and developers who are new to Redshift. You will move from data warehouse basics to deploying a cluster, loading data and keeping it fast and secure.

What you will learn

  • Explain what a data warehouse is and where Redshift fits
  • Weigh up Redshift benefits, limits and pricing
  • Choose node types and cluster options
  • Describe Redshift architecture and how a query runs
  • Tune queries and costs and set up workload management
  • Deploy, resize, back up and recover a cluster
  • Secure a cluster with networking and IAM settings
  • Connect to the database and load data from Amazon S3
  • Monitor Redshift and query data in S3 with Redshift Spectrum

Course outline

  1. Introduction: welcome, course overview and what you need before you start
  2. Redshift fundamentals: data warehouses, benefits and limits, pricing, use cases, node types, clusters, architecture, the life of a query, workload management and column-based storage
  3. Advanced capabilities: deployment options, Multi-AZ, backup and recovery, networking and security, IAM, connecting with SQL tools and Excel, loading data from S3, monitoring and Redshift Spectrum

Who this course is for

  • Database administrators and data architects
  • Data analysts and BI specialists
  • Data and cloud engineers starting with Redshift
  • Developers who need to query warehouse data

Before you start

A basic understanding of databases and SQL will help. Some familiarity with the AWS console is useful, as the hands-on exercises deploy a real cluster.

You will need your own AWS account to follow the exercises. The course shows how to use the free tier and startup credits, but always check your costs and delete clusters you no longer need. By the end you will be able to deploy, load and monitor a working Redshift data warehouse.
