Microsoft 70-765: Provisioning SQL Databases is a course for database administrators who set up and manage SQL Server databases, both on premises and in Microsoft Azure. It follows the topics of Microsoft exam 70-765 and suits people who already know the basics of SQL Server. The course runs for 22 hours 19 minutes across 102 video lessons.

What you will learn

  • Plan SQL Server solutions for on-premises and cloud use
  • Deploy SQL Server on Azure virtual machines
  • Set up and manage Azure SQL Database
  • Configure and manage database instances
  • Configure database storage to meet business needs
  • Set up high availability with Always On availability groups, log shipping and database mirroring
  • Plan for disaster recovery

  • Manage databases and instances: installing, configuring and looking after SQL Server instances and databases.
  • Manage storage: setting up database storage so data stays safe and performs well.
  • Availability and recovery: keeping databases online with Always On availability groups, log shipping and mirroring, and ready to recover after a failure.
  • Security and auditing: controlling who can reach data, setting permissions and tracking what users do.
  • Maintenance: the routine tasks that keep databases healthy over time.

Who this course is for

  • SQL Server administrators planning a move from on-premises servers to Azure
  • Database administrators who look after SQL Server
  • IT professionals who plan SQL Server solutions in Azure or on premises
  • SQL Server specialists moving workloads to the cloud
  • Learners who studied the 70-765 topics and want a structured refresher
  • Administrators who need to keep business databases secure, available and easy to recover

Before you start

This course is not for complete beginners. You should have a working knowledge of SQL Server administration and maintenance, and some experience with Azure. If you are new to SQL Server, start with a querying or administration course first. Access to a test SQL Server instance, and an Azure account you can practise in, will help you try each task as you learn it. Always practise on test systems, never on live databases.

About the 70-765 exam

Exam 70-765, Provisioning SQL Databases, was set by Microsoft. It checked that you could plan and build Azure SQL Database solutions, run SQL Server in Azure virtual machines and manage SQL Server on premises. It counted towards the MCSA: SQL 2016 Database Administration certification. Microsoft has since retired this exam and now offers role-based database certifications, such as DP-300: Administering Microsoft Azure SQL Solutions. The provisioning, storage and availability skills in this course still apply to SQL Server work today.
