You get 20 hours of training across 72 videos, plus 58 test questions.

Topics covered

  • Installation and configuration: setting up SQL Server 2008 and its services.
  • Security: logins, users, roles and permissions.
  • Backup and recovery: backup types, restore plans and recovery.
  • Monitoring and troubleshooting: keeping the database server healthy.
  • Performance: finding and fixing slow areas.
  • High availability: keeping databases online.
  • Data distribution: replication between servers.
  • Automation: scheduling and maintaining admin tasks.

Who this course is for

  • New database administrators who want a strong base
  • Working DBAs who still support SQL Server 2008
  • Systems administrators who look after SQL Server as part of their role
  • Developers who want to understand how databases are run in production
  • IT support staff who are asked to look after a SQL Server alongside other systems

Before you start

You should know what a database, a table and a query are. Some time using Windows Server or SQL Server will help. You do not need to be an expert, as the course explains each admin task step by step. If you are new to SQL, a short querying course first will make the lessons easier to follow. It also helps to have a test server, so you can try each task yourself without risk to live data.

About the 70-432 exam

Exam 70-432 was set by Microsoft. It tested your skills in installing, configuring and maintaining SQL Server 2008, and was one of two exams for the MCITP Database Administrator 2008 credential, alongside exam 70-450. Microsoft has since retired this exam, so you can no longer sit it. The admin skills it covers, such as backups, security and monitoring, still apply to later SQL Server versions, so the course remains a sound base for DBA work.
