CompTIA Security+ Training (SY0-601) is a self-paced course that teaches the core skills behind the SY0-601 version of the CompTIA Security+ certification. It is for network and systems staff who want to move into cyber security. You get 14 hours 4 minutes of training across 91 videos, plus 100 test questions to check your progress.
What you will learn
- Describe threat actors, attack vectors and threat intelligence sources
- Recognise malware and social engineering attacks
- Use cryptography, certificates and public key infrastructure (PKI)
- Set up authentication, identity and account controls
- Design secure networks and choose secure protocols and hardware
- Protect endpoints, mobile and embedded devices
- Apply secure coding, cloud and virtualisation security ideas
- Run vulnerability assessments and protect data and privacy
- Respond to incidents and support digital forensics
- Manage risk, business continuity, backups and physical security
Topics covered
- Security roles, controls and frameworks
- Threat actors, attack vectors and network reconnaissance
- Malware, social engineering and indicators of attack
- Cryptography, certificates and PKI
- Authentication, identity, accounts and access management
- Network design, hardware and protocols, including wireless security
- Endpoint, mobile and application security
- Secure coding, scripting, automation, cloud and virtualisation
- Privacy and data protection
- Incident response and forensics
- Risk management, business impact analysis, redundancy and backup
- Physical security
Topics build from security basics and the threats you face, through cryptography and identity, to secure network and system design. Later topics cover how to respond when things go wrong, including incident response and forensics, and how organisations manage risk, privacy, backups and physical security. This mirrors the five SY0-601 exam domains.
Who this course is for
- Network administrators who want to add security skills
- Systems administrators and systems engineers
- New security analysts and security consultants
- IT staff preparing for a first security certification
Before you start
You do not need an earlier security certification. A basic understanding of networking, such as IP addressing and how devices connect, will help you get the most from the course.
The course is made up of 91 video lessons with a total running time of 14 hours 4 minutes. You can watch at your own pace, pause and replay any lesson, and come back to a topic whenever you need it. When you finish, use the 100 test questions to check what you have learned and spot any areas to review.
About the SY0-601 exam
CompTIA Security+ is a widely recognised entry-level security certification issued by CompTIA. The SY0-601 exam objectives were split into five domains: Attacks, Threats and Vulnerabilities; Architecture and Design; Implementation; Operations and Incident Response; and Governance, Risk and Compliance. CompTIA retired the English SY0-601 exam in July 2024, and SY0-701 is now the current version. This course still builds strong core security knowledge, and you can move on to our SY0-701 course when you are ready to book the exam.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still take the SY0-601 exam?
No. CompTIA retired the English SY0-601 exam in July 2024. SY0-701 is the current version, and StemBoss offers a separate SY0-701 course.
Is this course still worth taking?
Yes, if you want a solid base in security. Most core topics, such as cryptography, access control, secure networks and incident response, carry over to SY0-701.
What are the five SY0-601 exam domains?
Attacks, Threats and Vulnerabilities; Architecture and Design; Implementation; Operations and Incident Response; and Governance, Risk and Compliance.
Do I need Network+ first?
It is not required, but basic networking knowledge helps a lot. CompTIA Network+ is a good first step if you are new to networks.
What can I study after Security+?
Common next steps are CompTIA CySA+ for security analysis or CompTIA PenTest+ for penetration testing.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. You get a StemBoss Certificate of Completion when you finish the course.
Can I get a refund?
Yes, within 14 days if you have completed less than 20% of the course. See our refund policy for details. Read the refund policy.
