Microsoft 70-247: Deploying and Operating a Private Cloud is an advanced online course for IT staff who build and run private clouds with Microsoft System Center. It follows the Microsoft 70-247 exam, which formed part of the MCSE: Private Cloud certification. The course runs for 18 hours 1 minute over 65 videos, with 60 test questions.

The course looks at the full life of a private cloud. You start with the design and the fabric, which is the pool of compute, storage and network resources the cloud draws on. You then deploy services, give users self-service access, monitor health and report on use. The later topics cover backup, recovery and automation, so the cloud keeps running with less hands-on work.

What you will learn

  • Design a private cloud base using System Center components
  • Set up fabric resources for compute, storage and networking
  • Deploy and manage services in a standard cloud setup
  • Use self-service so teams can request what they need
  • Monitor the cloud and produce operational reports
  • Plan for uptime, backup and recovery
  • Automate repeated deployment and admin tasks
  • Troubleshoot from the service layer down to the fabric
  • Manage virtual machines and services day to day
  • Plan how services are protected and brought back after a failure

Topics covered

  • Private cloud design with System Center
  • Fabric setup for compute, storage and networking
  • Service deployment and self-service portals
  • Virtual machine and service management
  • Monitoring and operational reporting
  • Availability, backup and recovery planning
  • Process automation
  • Troubleshooting across services and fabric
  • Service protection and recovery planning

Who this course is for

  • System administrators moving into cloud operations
  • Network engineers who support isolated or multi-tenant setups
  • IT managers planning better service delivery
  • IT consultants advising on infrastructure upgrades
  • Virtualisation staff working towards a Microsoft certification
  • Datacentre and enterprise support teams

Before you start

This is an advanced course. You should already be at ease with Windows Server administration, virtualisation and networking basics. Hands-on time with Hyper-V or System Center is advised, and some knowledge of backup and automation tools will help you keep up. If Hyper-V is new to you, spend some time with it in a lab first, as many tasks build on it.

About the 70-247 exam

Microsoft 70-247 checked your ability to configure, deploy and run a private cloud with System Center, covering the fabric, services, monitoring, protection and automation. Microsoft issued it, and it was paired with 70-246 for the MCSE: Private Cloud certification.

Microsoft retired all remaining MCSA, MCSD and MCSE exams by 31 January 2021, so 70-247 can no longer be booked. The design and operations skills here still apply to running private and hybrid clouds.
