Before you start

EC-Council says CHFI is open to people with a basic understanding of IT and cybersecurity, computer forensics and incident response. You should be comfortable with operating systems, file systems and basic networking before you start.

Forensics work must follow strict rules so that evidence holds up. Take your time with the early modules on process, evidence handling and first response, as later lessons build on them. Where you can, practise with forensic tools in a safe test lab, never on systems you do not own or have permission to examine.

About the 312-49 exam

The 312-49 exam leads to the Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) certification from EC-Council. It validates your skills in digital forensics investigations and forensic readiness, including how to acquire and manage evidence across different operating systems. EC-Council aims it at IT and security professionals who want to grow their incident response and forensics skills.

CHFI pairs well with ethical hacking skills. Knowing how attacks work helps you know where to look for evidence once an attack has happened.

Frequently asked questions

What does a computer hacking forensic investigator do?

They collect and analyse digital evidence after a security incident or crime, keep that evidence safe and legally sound, and report what they find, sometimes in court.

Which forensic tools does the course cover?

It includes lessons on AccessData FTK and EnCase, two widely used forensic toolkits, plus tools for password cracking and log analysis.

Do I need experience before taking CHFI?

EC-Council expects a basic understanding of IT and cybersecurity, computer forensics and incident response. Security+ or CySA+ level knowledge is a good base.

Does CHFI cover mobile devices?

Yes. A module covers mobile investigation alongside Windows, network, wireless, web and email forensics.

How is CHFI different from CEH?

CEH teaches how attackers break in so you can test defences. CHFI teaches how to investigate after an attack and gather evidence that stands up to scrutiny.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. You get a StemBoss Certificate of Completion when you finish the course.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, within 14 days if you have completed less than 20% of the course. See our refund policy for details. Read the refund policy.
